Rumor: Apple to Produce Original Content
Rich McCormick for the Verge:
Apple is in talks as part of a possible move into producing its own original programming, Variety reports. According to the publication, the company is looking to start hiring for a new development and production division in the next few months that would go into operation next year, producing content to rival streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Apple producing original content feels more like an add-on to it’s Apple TV (with a new model on the way) than something they have a core competency in. Starting a venture to sell something else is usually not the path to success. That doesn’t mean it can’t be though. In these arenas it’s all about getting the right people, as well as giving up a lot of creative control, which Amazon has proved in some cases but could be troublesome for Apple.
With Beats 1, Apple did a great job at letting the likes of Zane Lowe, Trent Reznor, and others take the reins and mold the experience into something familiar, new, and presumably successful. It will be a whole different ballgame competing with Netflix and Amazon Prime, but it will be interesting all the same.
